Alan Monroe, a fellow Rotarian from Florida is the Volunteer Manager for the Shelter Box program-one of the most successful Rotary programs in the world. The program was started by Tom Henderson a member of the Helston- Lizard Rotary Club in Cornwall , England. Yes, we double-checked with Alan and, indeed, this is the name of the club. Howsoever that may be, Tom was disturbed by all the human suffering following a huge natural disaster and came up with the idea for the shelter box in 1999. The heavy plastic box weighs 130 to 150 pounds and contains supplies specially picked for the location of the disaster. The box contains such supplies as: Tent, tool box, cooking stove, cooking equipment, thermal blankets, etc. The organization distributed over 110,000 boxes in 2011, and close to one million over its existence. Each box costs about $1,000 including transportation and volunteer travel. You can check out the USA portion of this organization by going to www.shelterboxusa.org. Our thanks to Alan Monroe for presenting this very interesting program.
This is an amazing program! I had no idea how far-reaching the Shelter Box program is. So proud to be part of the organization that created and supports this project!!
